PERSHING SCHOOL with our student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1, each student has a program where they receive academically challenging content with a multi-sensory approach. Students are encouraged to move at a comfortable pace while learning in small classes. . Students are encouraged and taught to utilize multi-sensory strategies that include the technology, and other resources that Pershing School can provide for learning disabled students. Our students are encouraged to take academic risks in our small, nurturing environment. The school’s goal is that every student will maximize their academic potential and acquire mastery in all required content areas.
PERSHING SCHOOL LANGUAGE ARTS PROGRAM: In addition to daily instruction in language arts, all students have the opportunity to have individualized tutoring for reading, small group writing classes, and study skills class with tutorial support. Our language arts teachers are trained in Orton-Gillingham methodology and employ a variety of multi-sensory strategies and techniques while teaching to mastery. Reading classes incorporate Wilson reading and NCS Learn software.
MATHEMATICS emphasizes the language of math calculation skills. Skills are taught systematically, sequentially, and creatively in small increments with continuous practice and review to mastery. Students are encouraged to learn the material at a pace commensurate with their math strengths and weaknesses while learning the appropriate grade-level mathematics.
SOCIAL STUDIES and SCIENCE teaches on grade level content through basic skills and research methods using texts, hands-on projects and materials through a multi-sensory approach. Social Studies and history topics include but are not limited to physical geography, history, and government. Written materials are chosen with regard to the reading and comprehension skill level of students while acknowledging that because of their cognitive abilities, some students may require high interest, easy-to-read textbooks.
TECHNOLOGY BASED LEARNING will support the academic skill based classroom learning. Special focus is given to building strong typing skills in all students, particularly because many of our Pershing School students also have dysgraphia.
DRAMA and ART encourage each student to share and develop his or her creative talents. Pershing School has a strong creative arts program.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION promotes development through creative, individualized programs, a sense of team building, and sportsmanship. Physical Education also builds self-esteem and improves cooperative group skills, while giving the students an opportunity to stretch, exercise, and release energy. Some Pershing School students have fine and gross motor difficulties. Our developmental, physical education program will serve to support such issues.
STUDY AND ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS are emphasized throughout Pershing School curriculum. Students receive ongoing reinforcement in a structured classroom setting. Morning and afternoon homeroom periods with the students’ advisor will support organizational and study skills, in addition to fostering home and school communication. Student planners provide daily opportunities for communication between parents and school.
SOCIAL SKILLS help students develop problem solving strategies and successful communication skills. We also focus on teamwork and the role of each individual in a group process. |
